Live Firing

The Marksman Trainer shooting ranges offer a comprehensive array of target training for handguns and rifles alike. Replicating real world situations, tactical mission training and target practice, amongst others, are what set our ranges apart from our competitors.

Fundamentally, the Marksman Trainer shooting ranges comprise of two system versions: the Marksman Trainer Musketry & Simulation Range, geared towards live and simulation fire, and the Marksman Trainer Tactical Range, focusing on combat training.

Both shooting ranges contain four important components:

  • Programmable software, allowing for a multitude of scenarios, targets and variables
  • Target Screen assembly
  • Bullet trap
  • Shot analysis system

Control Room and Software

The system operator, computer controller and software can be housed in the air-conditioned control room, which is protected and isolated from the firing area, while maintaining full control of the system. The instructor can verbally communicate with the shottist and personnel in the shooting area, view the projected image on the screen and control the system by means of a touch-screen panel in the shooting area.

The software has the following capabilities, to name just a few:

  • Display a series of static images or videos
  • Indicate the hit position on the projected target or image after firing a shot or burst
  • Provide for various elements and extras such as flashlight beams, ambient noise, wind, rain, darkness or daylight

Target Screen Assembly

Marksman Trainer Musketry & Simulation Range:

  • Fitted with a motorised paper screen consisting of four layers, on which the target is projected.
  • As a shot is fired, the software detects the shot and freezes the target on the screen.
  • The produced bullet hole becomes visible to the shottist and by automatically advancing the paper screen rolls, the bullet hole gets subsequently closed up.
  • Instant shot analysis is revealed and the range is ready for the next shooting scenario.

Marksman Trainer Tactical Range:

  • Comes standard with a horizontally adjustable paper screen.
  • The shottist is made aware of each shot by the range’s sophisticated shot analysis system, described below.

Bullet Trap Area

The bullet trap comprises of blocks of compressed vulcanised rubber that are arranged like building blocks behind the screen assembly. These blocks effectively retain rifle and handgun projectiles as a whole, avoiding integration, splintering and toxic dust. The vulcanised rubber blocks can be rearranged from high- to low hit areas, thus preserving and extending the life of the blocks. In order to prevent ricochet, the target screen area is lined with high-density rubber tiles.

Shot Analysis

Marksman Trainer Musketry & Simulation Range:

  • Makes use of camera shot analysis: as a round (or burst) penetrates the screen, a light emitting from behind the screen becomes immediately visible to the shottist.
  • This light shining through the pierced screen is also picked up by the camera, which sends the information to the hit detection unit.
  • The hit detection unit determines the location of the hit and displays the position, via the projector, onto the screen aiding shot-visibility to the shottist.

The Marksman Trainer Tactical Range:

  • A hole produced by a round (or burst) in the screen forces the infrared light, contained behind the screen assembly, to pass through the bullet hole and enter the firing area.
  • An infrared camera detects the position of the infrared light and sends the details to the hit detection unit.
  • The hit detection unit calculates the position of the bullet hole and projects a “dot” onto the hit for the shottist to see.

The shot analysis system captures and saves the shottists score, which can be recalled from the memory and printed.

For both systems, instant hit analysis means that the shottist is aware, round for round or burst by burst, where the projectiles have hit. A 99% hit detection rate at speeds of 3000 rounds per minute means that even rapid fire can be accurately exercised on the Marksman Trainer shooting ranges.
